Energy Consumption Log
A daily energy tracking log for dairy plant utility managers and engineers. Essential for energy audits, cost allocation, and identifying efficiency improvement opportunities.
Parameters Tracked
Electricity
- Total plant kWh (main meter reading — start and end of shift)
- Production area sub-meter reading
- Refrigeration sub-meter reading
- Utilities (boiler, compressed air, water treatment)
- Specific energy: kWh per litre of milk processed
Steam / Boiler
- Steam meter reading (kg) or boiler water feed meter
- Fuel consumed (kg coal / litres HFO / m³ gas)
- Specific steam consumption: kg steam per litre processed
- Specific fuel consumption: kg fuel per kg steam
- Boiler efficiency (calculated or measured)
Water
- Total water inlet meter (m³)
- Process water (pasteurizer, CIP)
- Cooling tower make-up
- Boiler feed water
- Effluent meter reading (m³)
- Specific water consumption: litres water per litre milk
Compressed Air
- Compressor run hours
- Air receiver pressure (start/end)
- Estimated flow (m³/hr if meter available)
Refrigeration
- Compressor run hours
- Suction pressure and discharge pressure
- Chilled water outlet temperature
- Cooling load achieved (approximate TR)
Production Reference
- Total milk processed (litres)
- Product mix (fluid milk, SMP, paneer, etc.)
- Shift duration (hours)
How to Use This Log
- Record meter readings at start and end of each shift
- Calculate shift consumption = end reading − start reading
- Divide by litres processed to get specific consumption KPIs
- Compare to previous shift and weekly average
- Investigate any day where consumption exceeds baseline by > 10%
Benchmarks (Fluid Milk Processing)
